Vleeshal invited French artist Audrey Cottin to present two of her performances within the framework of Kaspar Müller's exhibition Allegiance & Oblivion. Both artists, in their work, reflect on the status of the art object. Whereas Müller gives everyday objects an aura by placing them in an art context, Cottin elevates the works by literally lifting them up. Her Lifting performance can take place in many different contexts; previously she lifted artworks that she liked at an art fair. In Müller's exhibition, Cottin weighs the value of the works together with the public; as some of the works are too heavy to lift alone, some help of the public is definitely needed. In her Clapping performance she investigates the power of clapping. Normally you applaud after you've seen something worthwhile. But what happens if you only clap? Cottin breaks with the traditional relationship between art object and spectator and lets you experience the exhibition in a completely different way.
Vleeshal previously presented Audrey Cottin's work as part of Independent Brussels 2018.
