In the year of Marinus Boezem’s 65th birthday, three exhibitions of his work are taking place in the Netherlands simultaneously. The Kröller Müller Museum shows an overview of the early works (1960-1975); Museum de Paviljoens in Almere shows the landscape-related works, and for the Vleeshal in Middelburg, Boezem has made a brand new work containing countless references to both the early and landscape works.

Marinus Boezem (living in Middelburg) and the Vleeshal are no strangers to each other. He previously exhibited work in the Vleeshal (1979 and 1989), and in 1997 he was one of the participants in the 'Hidden City' project.

Several elements – a video, sound, a hardstone sculpture of a remote control, tree trunks, the light – call to mind meanings and possibilities that are not easily described. As often in Boezem’s work, opposites such as the natural and the artificial, the sublime and the banal, the accidental and the drected, the panoramic and the framed are played out against each other. The theatrical setting of the work underlines this ‘playing’ with meanings, and forms a stage on which the opposites and the plays on meaning come together in the – sublime – experience.
